Monumental Italian white marble copy of the Medici Urn. Early 20th Century
Impressive palatial model of the historic Medici urn. It is masterfully carved in white Carrara marble. The decorations in relief show a chariot and period figures in military, ceremonial and classical robes. The top frieze is ornate with grape vines and leaves. The Roman original, from the second half of the first century AD, was first recorded in 1598 in the inventory of the Villa Medici in Rome. In 1780 it entered the Uffizi in Florence, where it remains today.
Condition is very good commensurate with age and wear.
