Born in Sweden in the first half of the 18th century, hand-crafted of high quality Northern European solid pine, retaining the original red paint finish, having a curved bow front, shelved top with open niche shelf flanked by scalloped shaped supports, over a single large paneled cabinet door with quality hand-forged iron hardware, the original key opening the door to reveal shelved interior, at one time the top shelf was slotted to hold stemware but age related shrinkage has rendered it obsolete, rising on molded base.
Perfectly imperfect, this remarkable example brings to mind the aesthetic appeal of wabi-sabi, the old Japanese tradition of finding beauty in character and flaws. This piece is in great original unrestored antique condition. Strong, sturdy and stable, it presents well, with nicely aged heavily worn organically distressed patina over the whole. Wear consistent with age and use, including scattered chips, nicks, scratches, wood and paint loss. Retaining original antique character marks and rustic charm throughout, it’s sure to add unfussy sophisticated elegance, classic rustic warmth, utilitarian function, and rich historical depth to any space!
