This one of a kind bronze Roman dagger is displayed on an original Roman stone capital along with an original Constantine I bronze coin and the emperors bronze eagle.
These three items -the coin ,the eagle and the dagger were found in 1915 by an archaeologist in Central Europe and since then have been in his private collection.
The Dagger consists and is made of a bronze blade ,a bone handle presumably with the carvings of Pope Sylvester I and on top of the handle with the bronze bust which could be a bust of Constantine I. What kind of bone the handle made of is unclear, there is a good recognised engraving of the Roman numbers 14 (XIV), presumably 314. The year 314 A.D. in which ,according to History, Pope Sylvester I had converted and baptised Constantine I,- the Roman Emperor, who was the first emperor to adopt Christianity in the Roman Empire. Constantine I also made Constantinople (today’s Istanbul) a new capital of the Roman Empire. Pope Sylvester I was the first pope who was able to serve the church having a full support by the Emperor which allowed him to start building the actual structure of the Church as we know it. Constantine I was not only baptised by Pope Sylvester I but also, according to a well known document “The Donation of Constantine” was cured from leprosy. In gratitude, Constantine bestowed the pope with temporal power over Rome and the western part of the Roman Empire.
The exact restoration and preservation history of the dagger is unknown because the owner of the archeological collection is no longer alive. It’s in a great condition considering its age.
The dagger is placed on an original Roman stone capital which has dimensions of 13.5 cm length, 13 cm depth and 6 cm hight. The marble base is 8 cm by 8 cm, the bronze eagle on the marble block is 3 cm hight and 2.5 cm width and the dagger itself is 29.5 cm.
The total hight of the display is 47 cm.
This Dagger and the whole display is a unique part of the World, Roman and Christianity history.
