This is an English mid 19th century, country stool, with a chamfered rectangular Elm top having a hand painted, country scene on it. It has three turned oak legs that are pegged into the top.
Original hand painted English furniture is rare.
We interpret the hand painted scene as two deer, jumping from foliage into what looks like a meadow with tall grass and earth at the sides. There could also be two insects painted on the tops of the front legs where they protrude through the base.
The colors are mainly burnt orange/red, green, orange, white and possibly black, with a burnt orange border.
We consider the stool to be 19th century English, from the mid / early Victorian period, circa 1850. The top is well patinated with wear from natural use. Please see the images.
