This is a Greek style engraved and chased gold tone metal large Pyxis ( a cylindrical vessel/box with a lid that can be made of wood, ivory or metal). In the ancient times, it was mostly used by women to storage and transport trinkets, jewelry and cosmetics. The chased and engraved decoration features a continuous scenes mainly of men discussing and trying to defend themselves with some swords. It can be related to the Greek/Roman mythology because Athena or Minerva ( the Olympian goddess of wisdom, good counsel, the defense of towns, heroic endeavors, etc ) can be recognized by her outfit. She is wearing a long robe with the snake trimmed cape adorned with Medusa- the aigis. In her head, she has the traditional crested helmet and in her left hand, she is holding the spear. Following the same techniques, the upper border is adorned with flowers, tiny circles and squares. The lower border is decorated with a zigzag garland with dots. There are also engraved some words in an ancient language besides each of the depicting “characters”.
