This unusual antique floor lamp revisits in the late 19th century an oil lamp of antiquity. Raised on three cloven hoof feet and with stem encircled by a writhing serpent, the oil reservoir is hung with cleaning tools on chains. While the reservoir cover is stamped La Lampe Belge, this kind of hommage to the ancient world was often Italian and sold to prosperous tourists. We think that the reservoir is Belgian but the bronze lamp is probably Italian. It does not seem, to be a copy of a particular lamp but is rather an example of the Italian genius for sympathetic imitation.
