Only the wealthiest of people in the late 1800s would have been able to afford a hand-crafted copper bucket of this size and quality. This extra large antique bucket would be hung over a fire and the maid would wash both the clothes and bed linen. In all our years of buying and selling antiques we had never seen or sold an antique copper bucket of this size with the lid still there. And for both to still be in this superb condition made this find even more special. A former owner may have had this antique (re)galvanized, because the zinc coating would normally not stay intact for this long a period. This hand-crafted specimen is as strong and stable as the day it was hand-crafted all those years ago and it also has a wonderful patina. Mind you, the black residu on the bottom section of the copper is soot that accumulated there because of many years of being over a fire. The marvelous patina of the copper top section combined with the copper and soot color of the bottom section makes this hand-hammered copper with hand-forged iron handles bucket even more glorious and tactile. Because of its great look, its large size and its strength and durability this rare and large specimen from circa 1880 nowadays can be used for all kinds of display purposes, both inside and outside. Whether used as a grand firewood bucket
