Pierre Chapo Set of Six ‘S45’Dining room Chairs in Elm, France 1970s This set of six dining room chairs is a masterpiece, designed by Pierre Chapo in 1970s in France. Crafted in Elmwood, the chairs are a part of Chapo’s ‘Chlacc’ series, which uses a unique manufacturing process of gluing small wood sections together, creating lightweight and slender furniture with a solid graphical design and great attention to craftsmanship and joint solutions. The frame of each chair features remarkable straight lines that beautifully contrast with the slightly curved seating area, resulting in a genuinely sculptural appearance. These dining room chairs are in excellent, original condition, with a fantastic patina. Pierre Chapo was born in 1927 to a family of craftsmen and trained as an architect at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His love for travel took him to England and Scandinavia at a young age and then to South and North America, where he was captivated by the diverse architectural styles. In 1957, he and his partner Nicole established Société Chapo, a design workshop and gallery that showcased their work and other talented designers of the time. They later opened their famous gallery at 14 Boulevard de l’Hopital in 1958. Chapo’s work was characterized by special commissions that could be adapted to universal needs, combining contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship. He drew inspiration from the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, and the Bauhaus movement. His furniture designs were based on material, form, and function. He preferred elmwood and measured his furniture using the golden ratio. Chapo remained committed to his craft despite falling ill until his passing in 1987. He left behind a legacy of exquisite and timeless furniture designs that continue to inspire and captivate the hearts of many.
